Text Alerts from EDI Complete

These days most of us are familiar with sending and receiving text messages on cell phones. But did you know that EDI Complete can send you text message alerts to your cell phone?

It can! For a very long time EDI Complete has been able to send e-mail messages – something very useful for anyone tasked with monitoring an EDI system. Well, you can also send messages to your cell phone in the same way. This ability is not new – it’s just a new way of using the tools EDI Complete already provides.

In order to do this, you’ve just got to know the code. Since you can’t send these to a phone number alone, how do you do it? Here’s how: Each cell phone carrier has its own method for building an e-mail address that will be associated with a particular cell phone number.

They all start with the ten digit phone number, followed by the ‘@’ symbol. After that it’s followed by something of the carrier’s choosing. Below is a list of common cell phone carriers in the US and the “code” for determining the e-mail address. For instance, Alltel uses the ten-digit phone number followed by “@message.alltel.com”. If your phone number is 330-555-1234, you’d send to [email protected]

Alltel: [10-digit phone number]@message.alltel.com

AT&T and Cingular: [10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net

Nextel: [10-digit phone number]@messaging.nextel.com

Sprint: [10-digit phone number]@messaging.sprintpcs.com

T-Mobile: [10-digit phone number]@tmomail.net

Verizon: [10-digit phone number]@vtext.com

Since most cell phones have limits on the number of characters that can be received in a given text message, it’s best to keep the messages short and to the point. As a general rule (for both size and quantity reasons), we also advise sending only the critical notices to cell phones. For e-mails with reports and other attachments, sending these to your normal e-mail address is usually best.
