EDI HQ: How To!
Understanding the “Suppress Based On Element” Operator
In outbound mapping, sometimes users need to suppress an element based on another element being blank, such as in the case of a qualifier when the element it qualifies has no value. There are a few different ways to accomplish this, including using the “Suppress Based On Element” operator. This operator, however, comes with an important caveat: It executes all the operators for the data element it is comparing. This can be problematic especially for some uses of counters and text variables.
In the below example, the operator is incrementing a counter by 1, yet in the sample output we can see that the value of the REF02 is increasing by 2 instead of by 1.

|
On further examination of the segment we see that it’s the “Suppress Based On Element” operator in the REF01 element that is causing this double increment.

|
Note that the element has a note of caution in its Help Info section. The user will need to find an alternative method for manipulating the elements as they’d like.
