A new set of changes and additions is being ramped up for users of EDI in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) sector. Are you ready to implement the changes? IDC-10 is the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision.
It is used for the coding of diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases, as classified by the World Health Organization.
The new coding system is set for national implementation on Oct. 1, 2013. ICD-10 will expand the number of diagnosis codes from 14,400 to over 69,000. The number of inpatient procedure codes will grow from 4,000 to approximately 72,000. ICD-10 n
What should your organization be doing in preparation? Here are some simple guidelines…
1. Identify the areas that will be impacted and create a business leadership group.
2. Analyze your software and resources. Are your Healthcare & EDI software both capable of handling the new codes? Do you have resources in house to test and implement the changes?
3. Survey your Trading Partners on their readiness, testing plan and timelines.
4. Complete gap analysis and establish project plan with timelines.
