EDI 204 Transaction Set: Motor Carrier Load Tender

The EDI 204 transaction set is the Motor Carrier Load Tender. This is used by shippers to tender an offer for a shipment to a full truckload motor carrier. It may be used for creating a new shipment, updating or replacing a shipment, or canceling a shipment. Shippers may include manufacturers, distribution centers, wholesalers, or any other organization that handles and ships goods. A 204 transaction typically provides detailed pick-up and delivery information for a load, usually for a single pick-up location. This may include all or some of the following:
  • Carrier identification information
  • Scheduling information
  • Equipment requirements, such as length of truck required
  • Ship-to location information
  • Contact information for shipment recipient
  • Information on consignees, if relevant
  • Description of goods, including weight and other units of measure
  • Shipping instructions
A carrier will often respond to a 204 transaction with a 990 Response to a Load Tender transaction set, to indicate whether it accepts or declines the offer for the shipment. If the tender is accepted, the carrier will provide 214 Shipment Status Report transactions to inform the trading partner of pick-up and delivery information. The 204 transaction set is only for full-truckload shipments; thus, it is not to be used for providing motor carriers with less-than-truckload bill of lading information. This transaction set can be used to allow shippers or other interested parties to offer (tender) a shipment to a full load (truckload) motor carrier including detailed scheduling, equipment requirements, commodities, and shipping instructions pertinent to a load tender. It is not to be used to provide a motor carrier with data relative to a Less-than-Truckload bill of lading, pickup notification, or manifest.
