On August 24, 2012, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a Final Rule that delays the compliance date for use of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10). The new coding system was scheduled to take effect in October 2013. However, the date has now been pushed to Oct. 1, 2014.
How does ICD-10 affect your current EDI process?
As you know, the HHS issued a Final Rule in January 2009 that transitioned HIPAA EDI standards from ASC X12 Version 4010 to Version 5010. Health care organizations should be actively complying with Version 5010 as of January 2012. ICD-10 is the new coding system for use with Version 5010.
To comply with ICD-10, you will first need an EDI solution that adheres to HIPAA 5010 EDI standards. Our robust EDI Healthcare edition of EDI/HQ™ supports all 5010 transaction sets.
