What is a Value Added Network (VAN)?

A Value Added Network or VAN is a service that provides a method of data transmission between businesses in the EDI industry.  Most often the process is explained by likening it to the postal service with mailboxes.  The VAN receives transaction sets (tsets), identifies the sender and receiver information from the enveloping portion of the data and then routes the transaction, file or document to the recipient’s mailbox.
